About me

Dr. Sakeen W. Kashem cares for adults with skin conditions or concerns, including aging skin, skin infections, inflammatory or autoimmune skin diseases, skin cancers, and conditions that cause itching or pain. He also cares for veterans with skin diseases at the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Kashem's research explores the connection between the immune system and how we experience itch and pain. He also studies how the nervous system influences our immune response and ability to fight off cancer. His team has a particular focus on understanding how these interactions change as we age, aiming to improve treatments for skin diseases and quality of life for people who have them.

Kashem earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He also has a doctorate in immunology from the University of Minnesota. He completed a residency in dermatology at UCSF and is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in neuroanatomy. In addition to patient care and research, he takes pride in educating future dermatologists.

    Dr. Kashem is an excellent provider. He is also friendly and communicates clearly with me regarding my condition and treatment options. I feel the way he engages with me is empowering and I feel that ultimately I make well-informed decisions about my healthcare.

    Truly amazing service from care and concern of my issues :to my availability for treatment to Rx options and general planning for treatment. Dr was so positive and approachable.. My confidence was easily boosted because of his expertise and willingness to share detailed informationmy gratitude!

    So provider while very friendly and concerned gave me a new diagnosis within a minute of visual exam. In retrospect wish he had taken more time to explain the etiology of this new diagnosis and how/why it differed from the previous esp since he seemed to link this with other previous neurological conditions ( some sciatica and disc issues). In the moment (which seemed a little time-pressured) I left unclear as to what this new diagnosis meant but reckoned I could get more from the AVS/notes in My Chart and subsequent internet research though some were acronyms impenetrable

    While my diagnosis has no clear treatment I was pleased Dr Kashem understood studied the condition and showed empathy. Also used our time well. Very pleased. Few treatment options/ follow up available. Looking for insurance coverage for one treatment.

    Dr. Kashem quickly jumped to the worst case scenario despite me discussing my health anxiety with him up front. He offered no reassurance encouragement or comfort. He lacked empathy and the lack of humanity was more than I've ever experienced at UCSF. I felt rushed through the appointment and Dr. Kashem said he was going to take photos and didn't. Absolutely a terrible experience and will never be seeing him again.
